The Adverse Effects of Shifting Geo-Politics on South Africa’s International Bilateral and Trade Relations
The collapse of the “Global Village,” which once united the international community under a shared system of diplomacy, trade, peace, and security, has had severe consequences for developing African nations like South Africa. The rise of far-right movements in Europe and Scandinavia, along with shifting global politics, has further destabilized the once-peaceful world order.
These changes have led to increased trade protectionism, tariffs, and transactional diplomacy, with powerful nations shutting out developing economies like South Africa. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has also fueled fears of a potential Third World War, adding to global uncertainty. Meanwhile, trade disputes between major powers—such as the U.S., China, and Canada—have negatively impacted developing African economies, including South Africa.
U.S. Trade Policies and Their Impact on South Africa
The U.S. government, under President Donald Trump, has drastically reduced financial support for South Africa, particularly in military cooperation and health programs, including HIV/AIDS funding. Additionally, a 30% tariff hike on South African exports has severely hurt local farmers and agricultural businesses. These measures threaten to cause massive job losses, increased poverty, and food insecurity.
South Africa’s Response: Mcebisi Jonas as Special Envoy
To address these challenges, President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas as South Africa’s Special Envoy to the U.S. His mission is to rebuild trade and diplomatic relations with the Trump administration.
Mr. Jonas, a respected figure with extensive experience in finance and international business (including his former role as Group Chair of MTN), is well-suited for this critical task. He is also a close associate of Adv. Nkosinathi Malgas, Executive Director of the Advocate Malgas Foundation (NPC). The Foundation has full confidence that Mr. Jonas will prioritize South Africa’s interests, despite the difficult political climate.
His expertise in both domestic and international business, along with his diplomatic skills, will be tested as he navigates Trump’s transactional approach to trade and foreign policy. However, his political maturity and strategic insight position him well to secure favorable outcomes for South Africa.
A Hopeful Outcome
The Advocate Malgas Foundation hopes that Mr. Jonas’s negotiations will help prevent widespread job losses in agriculture and protect South Africa’s food security. We wish him great success in his new role as Special Envoy to the United States.
